Adani Group Intends to Construct 1,000-MW Data Centres Over the Next Ten Years

Adani Group unit AdaniConneX plans to create 1,000-megawatt data centres over the next ten years, nearly doubling the current industry scale, according to a senior company executive.

PANAJI: Data centre capacity is measured regarding the amount of power consumed. According to market research firm Arizton, India’s data centre market size in 2021 will be 447 MW, worth USD 10.9 billion.

Adani Group unit AdaniConneX plans to create 1,000-megawatt data centres over the next ten years, nearly doubling the current industry scale, according to a senior company executive.

Sanjay Bhutani, AdaniConneX Senior Vice President and Head of Data Centre Business, stated that the company’s first seven data centres would be located in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Pune.

“We are building 1,000-megawatt data centres. Today, the industry stands at 550 MW. Building a 1,000-megawatt data centre in the next decade is our business plan,” Bhutani said while speaking at 9.9 Group’s CIO and Leader Conference on Saturday.

Data centre capacity is measured in terms of the amount of power consumed. According to market research firm Arizton, India’s data centre market size in 2021 will be 447 MW, worth USD 10.9 billion.

Bhutani stated that the first seven data centres would have a total capacity of 450 MW over the next three years, with 550 MW in tier 2 and 3 cities.

He went on to say that underwater cable is critical for the data centre industry, and that only Mumbai and Chennai are connected to this network in India.

“We are unlocking that by bringing in a cable in the southern part of the country, eastern part of the country and central part of the country,” Bhutani explained.

According to Bhutani, the government has granted data centres digital infrastructure status, and seven states have already developed data centre policies, which is assisting the company in becoming more efficient and nimble.

“Government also came out with a lot of policies which are actually helping the nation to grow at a faster pace, creating a common infrastructure, which can be used by all of us. Let’s not create data centers individually,” Bhutani said.

He claims that despite India’s 550 MW data centres, a large amount of data is still leaving the nation. He added that to make India a worldwide digital hub, data from other countries must be hosted in India.

Adani Enterprises created a 50-50 joint venture with US-based EdgeConneX in February last year to establish data centres in India.

Previously, the JV announced intentions to establish data centres in Chennai, Navi Mumbai, Noida, Visakhapatnam, and Hyderabad.

Adani Group applied to the Uttar Pradesh government last year to develop a data centre in Noida’s Sector 80 with a Rs 2,500 crore investment.
