Kamal Haasan Talked About The Kerala Story and Expressed His Dislike for Propaganda Films at the IIFA 2023 Event

During a media interview, Kamal expressed his feelings against the film ‘The Kerala Story,’ saying, “I told you, it’s a propaganda film that I am against.”

New Delhi: Veteran actor Kamal Haasan, who is in Abu Dhabi for the Outstanding Achievement in Indian Cinema award at IIFA 2023, reacted to the ongoing controversy surrounding ‘The Kerala Story’ on Saturday.

During a media interview, Kamal expressed his feelings against the film ‘The Kerala Story,’ saying, “I told you, it’s a propaganda film that I am against.” It is insufficient to write a true narrative as a logo at the bottom. It needs to be true, and that is not the case.”

“It’s not enough to say it’s based on a true story because everyone does,” he continued. I believe you must strike a true chord in the audience, as there is no such thing as one type of movie. There is monoculture, which is not a good thing, especially in the arts. As a result, all genres of film should attend. And I am a big lover of indie films. Like newborns who grow up to be something very large. I also became a star as a result of these smaller pictures that were well-received by audiences. Awards are a different story. I’m talking about the audience approving it long before the award jury bestows the honour.”

Political parties have criticized ‘The Kerala Story‘ for its plot.

The key actors in ‘The Kerala Story’ are Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, and Sonia Balani. The film sparked outrage when its trailer stated that 32,000 Kerala women had gone missing and joined the terrorist group ISIS. This declaration sparked a heated political controversy, with several politicians questioning the claim’s authenticity.

On May 18, the Supreme Court stayed the West Bengal government’s ban on the film “The Kerala Story.” “West Bengal’s prohibition is untenable. “The order of West Bengal’s additional secretary shall stay,” remarked Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.

The Supreme Court also ordered The Kerala Story’s producers to include an appropriate disclaimer on the baseless figure ‘32,000’ presented in the film.

According to Senior Adv Harish Salve, who is representing the film’s makers, a disclaimer would be included stating that “there is no authentic data to back up the suggestion that the figure of conversions is 32,000 or any other established figure” and that “the film represents the fictionalised version” of the subject.
